NPR Music’s ‘All Songs Considered’ has unveiled another new Cat Power song, the opening track off her forthcoming and ninth studio album ‘Sun’.
We have already heard ‘Ruin’, and ‘Cherokee’ sounds even more tragic with its alarming guitar signal, bleak piano chords that repeat itself with Chan’s buried vocals singing ‘marry me to the sky’, then ‘If I die before my time, bury me upside down’.
There is a lot of going on at the same time, the song stays partially mysterious to me during the whole time with its hypnotic-ascending and accelerating grove, which gives the impression of falling down in a bottomless well of her dispair. It’s different from the first single and quite captivating with these vibrant drum loops.
I wonder how many songs off ‘Sun’ will be revealed like this before its official release on September 4.
