Gossip, a little known indie pop group out of Washingtonhas broken out onto MTV with their hit “Move in the Right Direction”. If you take Adele’s soul and add indie pop flavor, you’ve got Gossip and I, for one, am very impressed. The song itself is fun and upbeat in both musical and lyrical aspects. The video is an amazing reflection of this great song.
I’m really not one for plot based music videos, so when I saw that the video for “Move in the Right Direction” was really just Gossip doing their thing, I almost immediately decided that I loved this band. Accompaniedby a rising electronically charged pulse, drummer Hannah Blilie kicks off the song by introducing the head-nodding, foot-tapping beat that drives this song until the very end.
Within the first 10 seconds it is easy to see that the aforementioned soul of the group is displayed quite proudly by vocalist Beth Ditto, who embodies her lyrics of “i have faced my fears, now i can move in the right direction”. She just glows with the joy of someone who’s moving on from past turmoil and is, well, headed in a new direction.
Even the animated words of the room Gossip is performing in show a little sass. Besides boldly displaying the lyrics of the song, they say intro during the intro, flash the words dance break during the dance break in the middle of the song, and then Beth dances behind the words “fade out” as the song fades out. This is really one fantastic video, one fantastic song, andone fantaaaastic band. I look forward to hearing more from them in the future and so should you.
