By now, with their record breaking single “We Are Young (feat. Janelle Monae)” and chart topping album Some Nights, most everyone knows who the band Fun is. Now, Fun is giving music fans everywhere even more of a reason to love the band. On June 4th, Fun released through MTV their newest music video for their song “Some Nights” and it is fucking amazing.
This music video is the only one I’ve ever seen to focus on a civil war battlefield but this appears to have been the best possible way to portray the message of the song. I don’t doubt the decision for a second because as you watch the video, you can see in everyone’s eyes the heart pounding determination and love that permeates this song.
In the past 4 months since the album Some Nights was released, listening to this song has just been so incredibly uplifting and heartstopping. Now, there is a video to go with the sheer dazzling brilliance thatis “Some Nights” and fans of Fun everywhere should be fangirling (or fanboying).
The video focuses on one young soldier, in what I would assume to be his first battle in the American Civil War, and his love interest. While watching the video, I was immediately struck by how the plot of the video corresponds to the song. With lyrics like “This is it, boys, this is war – what are we waiting for? Why don't we break the rules already?” set to the rush of a midnight battle or “I found a martyr in my bed tonight. She stops my bones from wondering just who I am” set to the young soldier stroking his love’s cheek, any viewer of this video will be struck by the immense power of the song.
Ignoring the incredibly accurate plot movement for a moment, the actual band has charisma and power like I have never seen. Front man Nate Ruess is constantly jumping and getting as into the music as I do when I’m singing it to myself in my bedroom. The same can be said of drummer Andrew Dost who can always be seen to deliver a pounding beat that never fails or guitarist Jack Antonoff who supplies incredible riffs and solos behind every vocal and in every purely instrumental moment.
All in all, this band has simply outdone themselves this time and I’m so very proud to be a fan of them. This video is supreme and if Fun isn’t a fucking fantastic band, then I don’t know who is because….damn.
