Shakira is a saucy vixen who dances around telling us her hips don’t lie. She could well be the most famous (if not the only) hispanic belly dancer of all time. Shes gorgeous and has an effervescent quality that somehow makes it impossible to consider her just another pop star tart.
Her songs are likable and her collaborations generally fair. She has a huge Latin following obviously, as her native country is Columbia, but amongst the hoochie coochie some may not realize what tremendous humanitarian programs she has taken on.
Shakira is not a pretty face endorser/supporter she is a grass roots activist that gloriously doesn’t make her every move a public relations opportunity. Her acts are intelligent and discreet. Discreet for the most part but there is buzz of her latest moves.
Shakira is actually a global advocate for early childhood education and child development.
This weekend she spoke alongside US President Obama and Colombian President Santos during the 6th Summit of the Americas in the Plaza San Pedro de Claver de Cartagena de Indias, Colombia.
The songstress is the founder of both Latin America in Solidarity Action and the Pies Descalzos / Barefoot Foundation. ALAS is a coalition of artists and business leaders seeking to promote integrated early childhood public policies.
The Pies Descalzos / Barefoot Foundation, whose mission is to make education universally available to every child, operates schools and educational projects in Colombia, South Africa, and Haiti, feeding and educating approximately 6,000 children.
In October, Shakira was named a member of the President Obama's Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanics.
Beauty and brains and deeds well done.
