Beck Back At Work

On Tuesday, bassist J. Meldal-Johnsen tweeted this: ‘Working on new beck stuff’

Yes, an innocent minuscule tweet in the huge Twitter world, which could actually mean a lot since Meldal-Johnsen has been Beck’s bassist for quite some time, since 1997 to be exact!

Beck hasn’t released an album since his 2008 ‘Modern Guilt’, so it is  about time he stops flirting with Charlotte Gainsbourg and Steven Malkmus, or wasting his time with soundtracks and HBO series.

There was already a Pitchfork article in August 2010, reporting that Beck had new songs
But I'm always working on my own music, too. I've been working on a record for a few years; I recorded it in the fall of 2008’

Beck had even added that he had ‘worked on it a little bit here or there’,… so why didn’t he release it?
One song in particular was called ‘Rococo’,… and curiously and inconveniently, it was at the same time than Arcade Fire’s ‘Rococo':
‘It's the kind of thing where I turn around and two years have gone by and it starts to get less relevant to what's happening at large. At this point, five other bands may have done something that felt really exciting and new two years ago. Like, the title of the record was going to be Rococo and now Arcade Fire have a song called "Rococo". But I'm sure the music is going to come out. I'm not sure if I'm going to put out 12"s or put the songs on my website. I just have to get them done. I'm going to try and finish them this summer. It's just a matter of the songs being good enough and not embarrassing.’

It was in 2010, so I guess these songs were really embarrassing because we never heard a note of them.

Whether this new material announced by J. Meldal-Johnsen has anything to do with these old songs or not, we may expect a new Beck album soon. And Iman may just hear these new songs at the Governor’s ball next June… lucky bastard!
