Geoff Barrow is also doing hip-hop? That was news for me! Beside being Portishead’s instrumentalist and mastermind behind the side project Beak>, he also works under the funny rap/hip-hop name Fuzzface.
His latest project, Quakers, is about to release a new album, and you can listen to the track ‘Fitta Happier’, an obvious reference to the Radiohead’s song, for some good reason! The hip-hop song samples Radiohead’s ‘The National Anthem’, played by what it seems to be a large fanfare/marching band, and also features rappers Guilty Simple, and M.E.D.. The result is totally powerfully cacophonic.
Quakers is in fact a very large collective which also features Portishead engineer 7-Stu-7, Australian producer Katalyst, and more than 35 artists (among them Aloe Blacc, Guilty Simpson, Dead Prez. Phat Kat, Prince Po). Their record will feature 41 tracks, and will be released on March 27th.
