If you hate Gingrich as much as I do, you must be happy to know he just got sued over his campaign’s use of ‘Eye of the Tiger’, the 1982 hit by rock band Survivor.
Sure, because when I look at fat Gingrich, I see Rocky Balboa, his strength and stamina, … what was he thinking? It’s completely out of touch.
According to the NY Times, ‘the lawsuit was filled in Illinois federal court on behalf of Rude Music Inc, owned by Frank Sullivan, a co-author of the song’, whereas another co-writer on the song, Jim Peterick did not join the lawsuit.
There is a long history of these kinds of cases, for example Tom Petty sent a letter to Michele Bachmann when she was using his own ‘American Girl’, Jackson Brown and David Byrne respectively sued Senator John McCain over the use of ‘Running on Empty’ and Charlie Crist, over the use of ‘Road to Nowhere’, and this is just to name a few.
Gingrich has just lost Florida, and he should know that Rocky is a winner, not a pompous ass and Spanish-language-of-the ghetto hater.
Anyway, I always wonder why politicians think they have the right to use whatever song they like at their campaign events, without asking any permission.
Very few artists are conservative, so it is true that republicans have very little choice when it comes to choose a campaign song, but they can always dig into some Ted Nugent, Gene Simmons and Kid Rock’s old classics.
