Spiderman the Musical has been the source of much morbid curiousity for me. Actors flopping from the sky, sets on fire, staff changes, its like an old time soap opera with the added pizzaz of Bono and the Edge to muck it all up.
After numerous stops and starts it has broken a Broadway record. the production took in $3 million over a nine-show period, which breaks the previous single-week grossing record held by the Wizard of Oz-inspired musical Wicked, which grossed $2.2 million over eight shows in 2011.
How the hell did that happen? A change of director to Philip William McKinley who stepped in and overhauled the show, changing key parts and having U2 and the Edge rewrite some numbers. Since then, the show has evolved into a blockbuster Broadway hit.
Still this $70 million dollar show will always have the tag of lamest start of any show ever.
