In 1982 Kurt Cobain and his band Nirvana appeared on a then hip Saturday Night Live. On that particular show Kurt sported a Flipper t-shirt hand crafted in sharpie.
Now decades later retailer Forever 21 is selling that shirt- for $16.90. Grunge is apparently 'back' and homogenized and the shirt is currently sold out online. No credit or mention of Nirvana is made in the shirts description instead it reads “A crew neck tee with sketched ‘Flipper’ graphic at front.”
DIY was once all the rage. Punks and rockers of all sorts created their own style. Now with mass production chains such as Hot Topic kids no longer have to fashion out their look. Considering the demographic of Forever 21 is markedly Under 21, one of those kids parents is going to immediately make the connection of the T-shirt and Cobain.
A nostalgia trip for Mom and Dad and a shiny new mass produced rag for little Chris. Poor Kurt- its the irony of it all.
