The Shining Twins at the El Rey Theater, Thursday, October 27th, 2011 Reviewed

You may expect a lot from two girls dreaming about Stanley Kubrick’s scariest movie and wearing a GG Allin and the Scumfuc t-shirt.

This is indeed placing the creepy bar very high, but there was absolutely nothing scary about the Shining Twins, two charming young girls who were singing with cartoonish-Betty-Boop voices over pop-punk songs that were reminiscent of the Ramones…. Didn’t they even cover them?

Their lo-fi, stripped-down punk rock only played by Alex Weiss on bass, Marissa Kreiss on drums and Kenny Elkin on guitar (who only stayed during the first songs), was actually a lot of fun, as the two girls seemed to have a blast on stage, laughing and making noise like two cute drunk chipmunks.

Their songs were reworking this teenager-angst-I-want-to-be-a-rebel thing, with some real badass-female-sex-power claims, denying boyfriends ‘I don't want you anyway I don't need you’, sung with childish voices over some simple old-school pop-punk melodies.

‘This song is about sluts’ one of them said before starting another of their numbers, and they had another song entitled ‘I hate you’,… you get the idea!

I cannot say the crowd was really into them, their extreme laid-back attitude may have been for something into this, but I have read that the New York girls are finishing their new record, ‘This Is Dumb’ which Albert Hammond Jr. of The Strokes, so they should be quite all right.
