One goal of Filter’s Culture Collide was to bring bands from all over the world, and Danish pop band The Asteroids Galaxy Tour was an example of that effort. However, I’m not sure they really need help when they have been launched by Amy Winehouse who asked them to be her opening act in Copenhagen, have toured with Katy Perry on several sold out dates for her summer 2009 European tour, and have already had a hit song, ‘Around The Bend’ chosen for an iPod touch commercial in 2008.
Their buoyant bubbling pop injected of faux-soulful horns was working great on the crowd on Sunday afternoon, and singer Mette Lindberg, all red and gold, was the center of all the attention with her charming good looks, girlie moves and child-femme-fatale voice.
They are originally a duo consisting of Lindberg and producer Lars Iversen, but they were actually a large band on stage, bringing an old school glam aesthetic with a horn section, and a frontgirl not afraid to show a little of a drunken attitude despite her channel-chic outfit.
'That’s the first festival we play in the US’, she said with her charming smile, after having announced an album ‘Out Of Frequency’, for next year, following their debut album ‘Fruit’. She looked like a sort of Gwen Stefani meets Debbie Harry, moving over laid-back riffs.
The set was all retro poppy-funky, and there actually were a few catchy dance tunes, like the last one they played, ‘The Golden Age’, an obvious party hook, which was also chosen this year for another commercial, Heineken. When leaving the front of the stage, I was thinking that they certainly had this media appeal for crowd pleasures.
