the Strange Boys at FYF fest: Saturday September 3rd, 2011

There is definitely a revival of that kind of sound, with Tijuana Panthers (that I unfortunately missed), Ty Segall and the Strange Boys in the FYF fest line-up, I can see a tendency there… The Strange Boys whom I caught at half set, follow that same vein of giving a new twist to a garage-surf 60s sound, infusing this time a Dylan-esque harmonica in it.

I had seen them before and their bouncing riffs had triggered a sort of riot at the Echo, as people unexpectedly started to mosh and surf, but it was late and dark. In middle afternoon plain light, the sun directly hitting the crowd face, it was a little different, no such thing, people were definitively moving far less, but there was still this same potential energy and enthusiasm coming from the crowd. It’s funny how their music totally has a signature sound, but at the same time is made of an amalgam of different influences, being even very Mississippi dirty bluesy on some songs

It was not their first time at the FYF fest, and they felt completely comfortable in a punk festival playing their upbeat bouncing tunes, they even announced an upcoming and third album ‘Live Music’, and when frontman Ryan Sambol asked the crowd for requests, they started playing the Family Stone’s ‘Everyday People’… Too bad their set was almost at the same time than Cults’, as they were building a sound with an impressive range, ask Ty Segall and his band mates who were watching on the side of the stage.
