The uber hipsters The Black Keys have filed a suit against Valley National Bank and Della Femina/Rothschild/Jeary Partners ad agency. Why? For unlawful use of the Keys song "Tighten Up'.
Ok, this is a great way to get some press but it also makes the band look like a group of pathetic ego trenched hipsters….oh wait, thats what they are. I completely understand the infringement issue but seriously I bet maybe 2% of the banks TV audience even knew who that song was. If I recall the infamous "Diamonds and Guns" by The Transplants selling shampoo… not one person I asked knew what band that was.
Perhaps thats the real beef? Hitting a wide ranged audiene without an artist nod? Could be. The suit is for an unspecified damages. The suit also says Valley National Bank continued to run the ad even after a Black Keys rep sent it a cease-and-desist letter.
Which proves my point that no one really cares.
