"Knibb was simply the most important and influential modern drummer this country produced," said Herbie Miller, director of the Jamaica Music Museum. "A master percussionist, he contributed to every style of popular and not so popular musical form…As a drummer he established a rhythmic syntax through bold innovative advances."
Ska fans such as myself fully understand the magic Knibbs put out. You simply cannot in any way not for a moment be sad if youre listening to ska. This genre is one of the very few that wont even allow you to sit still. It is physically impossible to sit through "Guns of Navarone" without that foot moving. You can feel free to test my theory at the end of this post.
The Skatelites were the originals of this movement. Blending reggae and calypso, jazz and rock to create this amazing whirlwind of sound that sucks you in and bops you about. Horn heavy and keyboard vital ska began in the 50s and has evolves to this day. The two tone movement checker boarding black and white created an environment of colorblind solidarity.
The Skatelites actually retired in the 60s but luckily came back more grey less flash but tactfull and effectively performed. Knibbs died of liver cancer survived by his wife and maybe about a million children and grandchildren.
Now watch this guy work
