The Holidays, opening at the Echo on Sunday, March 20th, 2011

African bongos, steel drums, heavy beats, lots of guitar jams, some smooth synth, danceable rhythms almost new wavy at times, many ethereal oo-oos sung by a blond guy who looked a little like Luke Skywalker, the 5 young boys opening the evening at the Echo on Sunday night was called The Holidays.

Before they talked, their blondness and synth-pop sound had made me thought for a minute they were from a Nordic country, may be because of the Norwegian band A-ha, but not at all, as they revealed soon they were from Australia. They actually seemed to incorporate a lot of jazzy influences and their hybrid music, which relayed a lot on beats and some undeniable tropical or even Africanized fingerprints.

They had tons of energy on stage and were bringing back a dreamy idea of piña colada drunk under palm trees, or this summer sunshine suddenly missing in LA,… well, with such a moniker, it was not a total surprise.
