He who lives by the autotune will one day die by the autotune and that day could well be the one where they headline their own show. Whether that applies to Travi$ Scott you can now discover for yourself. The Kanye West find you first met on Yeezus (it is Scott who originally coined the phrase “New Slave”) and then cemented his reputation when he added his voice to Hova’s “Crown”. Now, a mixtape or two later, here comes the limelight. Travi$ debut album, the excellent Rodeo, was released on Friday and the Monday through Wednesday stand will stand as a CD release party at the tiny Gramercy Theatre. The next time you see him in the city, Scott will be opening for The Weeknd at MSG, so get close while you can.
Monday – L7 – Irving Plaza – Late 80s early 90s all girl punk rock (maybe a touch more metally than most) are back and very welcome.
Tuesday – BB Kings – Heaven is still a place on earth or the GoGos lead singer and resident sex symbol.
Tuesday – Thee Oh Sees – Bowery Ballroom – Mike Long, who knows a thing or two about rock and roll, rates these twenty year LA based veterans of art rock who are finally ready for their close up. On the strength of their new album, Mutilator Defeated At Last, Long might well be right. It wouldn’t be the first time.
Wednesday – Air Traffic Control – Mercury Lounge – Top notch power pop band
Wednesday – Rough Trade – Lou Barlow – The new album is killer
Thursday, Friday – Thee Oh Sees – Warsaw – Smaller club but in Brooklyn so caveat emptor.
Friday – Dru Hill – BB Kings – Old school r&b for the ladies.
Friday – The Milk Carton Kids – Town Hall – The new album can get a little dozy but no worse for all that.
Saturday – Scorpions – Barclay Center – Who said Germans can’t rock? Not me. I said they can’t win world wars.
