Sam Smith Takes Lead For The First Time Since “Lonely” On Disclosure’s “Omen”

This was a clever way as possible for Sam Smith to dip her toes in the In The Lonely Hour seas of post-superstardom, a follow up sure, but not to “Stay With Me” (and certainly not to the John Legend remix of “Lay With Me” earlier this year) but to his breakthrough “Latch” hit with Disclosure.

Disclosure? Not a huge fan of these guys, when I saw em live I thought they were a little, what’s the word here? pre programmed. And their debut was like a jukebox, sure, and a good one, but not a rebellious one at all. There is something smartly cold about the duo.

Still “Latch” is a major song by anybody’s standards and “Omen”, off Disclosure’s eagerly awaited second album Caracal, is pretty good standard issue disco with a House beat. Good enough, better than “Holding On” (with Gregory Porter) though I bet we are all holding out for the return of Lorde

So, this is great, nice to hear Sam singing a lyric we haven’t heard before, but not much more.

Grade: B
