So what’s the difference between Americana and country? When it comes to Sturgill Simpson not a damn thing, leading his band through a sparsely attended mid afternoon set, he doesn’t hit his stride till a full bloodied “Living The Dream” and then doesn’t let go.
Country? Hell, he is more country than Blake Shelton and Luke Bryant combined and he has the voice to (cowboy) boot, filled with character and sturdy Southern soul. So why is the sparse audience thinning out? Well, on a personal basis I listened to the new album any number of times and still didn’t recognize one. Not even the last one, an Oswell brothers song. “We wanted to sound like T Rex on this shit” he claims. Hey, nicely done.
