– Irony. Utility. Pretext – Algiers – A deep track off their very dramatic new album is, well, very dramatic, a soulful wail like Jim Morrison with a cold and thrashing swirls of dark snyths and whips, all leading to a Gospel denouement. Wild stuff from the deep South – B+

– How Big, How Blue, How beautiful – Florence + The Machine – New wave pop as sung by Maria Callas, makes its point then steps on your head – B+

–  I Can’t Think About It Now – Dawes – This is the one that has the world comparing em to the Eagles, a brash hard country wall of guitar sounds – A-

– Sugar Town – Nancy Sinatra – The sweetness may kill you but the lyric has bite, “never had a friend or wanted one” … you don’t have a friend – A+

– I Work A Lot better – John Anderson – Lost his 80s edge but not his 80s voice – B+

– Abandonware – Roman A Clef – Indie mood music but better than you think because the song is a goodie – A-

– Rattled By The Rush – Pavement – The best bit is where he catches his dad crying – A

– Big Love – Ben Lee – This is a sweet but snappy track, an ode to the real thing – B+

– Another Loser Fuck Up – Christopher Owens – Absolutely terrific rocker, I have no idea why his Girl fans haven’t followed him solo – A-

– It’s All Going To Pot – Willie Nelson And Merle Haggard – Weed is the new mylox – B
