Great Expectations – Toto – The thing about prog-rock is that it is smug for no reason, it is the Bob Lefsetz of popular music, highbrow content for low brow sensibilities. This song closes out the new Toto album and the only thing we know for sure is lower your expectations right now – D
Better Off – Steve Grand – Uber-bombastic power rock meets country – C
Wooden Ships – Nellie Kay – This is a drag, of course so is the original, however if you search out her “Itchykoo Park” cover on the album it is pretty darn good – C-
Sweet Black Angel – Leo “Bud” Welch – I keep on thiking this guy is gonna get more swampy and he keeps on sounding like Chicago blues – A
Prairie Song – Jeff The Brotherhood – Sounds like Kurt Vile sounding like Neil Young on a drone buzz or acoustic Crazy Horse – B+
Incomplete – James Bay – God, I hope the Bay phenom doesn’t last much longer – C
Wool – Earl Sweatshirt – Every single time I listen to this guy I feel better for the experience. He has something of the Chance The Rapper in him, plus some Tyler and some Mellow Hype, some Frank Ocean, some Kendrick and he is all original… a great lyricist (I prefer him to poster boy Kendrick) and a fine rapper – A
Boxing day Blues – Courtney Barnett – I think I am gonna pass on this particular hype… maybe after I’ve seen her live I will change my mind – C+
Gonna Get It Wrong – Allison Moorer – The slightest edge of optimism even if crouched I a negative, to take you home – A
