– My Stunning Mystery Companion – Jackson Browne – With news that JB is playing this middle of Brooklyn King’s Theatre in September, it is as good as any excuse to give the man a spin. This late period, romantic dream is everything Browne does best, reminds me of an ex, and the “solitary nature notwithstanding” line still hits home – A
– Bad Year – Evans The Death – This album should get the UK indie rockers well buzzed and the catchiest song on the new album, Expected Delays, is everything you might have hoped. A happy (ish) song about a sad thing – A-
– Credit – Meghan Trainor – Doo wop knockout – B+
– Tiny Boy From Outer Space – The Rezillos – Pretty and weird rock ballad – B+
– Pop Song (Games) – Heems – Percolates but lacks the fun of much of the other songs on the album with, oddly enough, a straight up romance song – B-
– Come What May – Peggy Lee – From the 1951 radio show, this is a typical 50s ballad, very pretty and “so darling I’m confessing not knowing is a blessing so you can keep me guessing, come what may…”
– Supafly – Texas – My friend Karen Anne co-wrote this, a truly fun little ditty, recorded in Truth And Soul’s Queens studio by the UK hitmakers – A-
– Uptown Funk – Mark Ronson And Bruno Mars – If the Marvin Gaye estate got $7M for “Blurred Lines”, how much should the James Brown estate get for this? – C+
– Your Loving Arms – Karen Overton – Before Ramona, Karen Anne went EDM on this soulful disco move – B+
– Firestone – Kygo, Conrad Sewell – The Norwegian DJ comes over all Avicii – C+
