Let’s Active: rock nyc Concert Picks week Of March 9th, 2015

04

It’s not every day I see a top top show, an “A+” show. Since rock nyc has been around, in 2009 there was Van Morrison’s “Astral Weeks” gig (the second one, at the Beacon), in 2012 Aretha Franklin at Radio City Music Hall, Bobby Womack at City Winery in 2013 and this January D’Angelo at the Apollo and that’s about it. So I don’t expect D’Angelo to best it at all, I don’t expect him to match it. I still expect him to be great..

Monday, Tuesday – Dropkick Murphys – Irving Plaza – No, they don’t belong to New York. The Pogues belonged to New York more. But they are the best Irish rock band still around, so Boston’s finest will have to do.

Tuesday – The Black Ryder – Mercury Lounge – Shoegaze has never been sexier, their new album, The Door Behind The Door, is especially good.

Tuesday – Herp Albert – Café Carlyle – Should be a night of sophisticated moods

Wednesday – Cursive – Bowery Ballroom – Saddle Creek’s second finest export playing an entire album. An entire great album, The Ugly Organ.

Wednesday – Jazmine Sullivan – Irving Plaza – her third album is sweet and smooth r&b.

Wednesday – Brandi Carlile – MHOW – Her latest is Americana but with more punch than usual

Wednesday- The Cribs – Mercury Lounge – Legendary UK rock ban play tiny club… now you know why there are so many ex-pats here

Thursday – An Evening W/ Seth Avett & Jessica Lea Mayfield – Sings Elliott Smith

Friday – Meghan Trainor – Irving Plaza – The album shoul have been bette but it was still goo, plus you won’t get too many chances to see Meghan in a room this small again.
