Billy Idol FKA William Broad is back! My former buddy, who I interviewed for Creem back in the day, and who snubbed me (or forgot me) years later is back and guess what, I am gonna see him. Billy is cool, remember him telling Adam Sandler how to get the girl back in “The Wedding Singer” -back when appearing in a Sandler movie was a compliment?
His current music suffers from , well, not being all that great, but he has a nifty back catalog of 80s rockers and 70s punk rockers, including “White Wedding” and “Rebel Yell” and “Your Generation (“Doesn’t mean a thing to me” – Lorde should cover it!) and “Dancing with Myself which goes round and round.
Last time I saw Billy in concert was a superb acoustic set at the Bottom Line in 2001 and I am ready for another night the punk rock icon. An ear for the riff, a cute sneer ala Elvis, and a high energy band leader personality, Billy is also pushing his new autobiography and was the keynote speaker at the CBGB’s Fest which I missed due to a terrible cold which nailed me for a week. Here is the PR release:
“Rock icon BILLY IDOL announced today that he will release his first new album in almost a decade, this October. The album will come out on IDOL’s own BFI Records, via Kobalt Label Services. Produced by Trevor Horn, the new album will arrive close to the release of IDOL’s highly anticipated self-written autobiography, Dancing With Myself, which as previously announced will be released in the U.S. via Touchstone, an imprint of Simon and Schuster Inc., on October 7.”
Trevor Horn, eh? How 80s can you get???
