Every year around this time the same worry rears its ugly head: who to see on New Year’s Eve? Elton at Barclay? Holy Ghost at Irving Plaza? Deer Tick at Brooklyn Bowl? So many decisions, so little time…
First let’s step back and take a look at the last coupla years:
2008 – 2009 – My Morning Jacket – MSG – Completely epic performance, and I was drinking back then and had a blast – Grade: A
2009 – 2010 – Mariah Carey – MSG – Mariah was drinking and opening act Trey Songz took off his shirt… yuck – Grade: C+
2010 – 2011 – Chuck Berry – BB King’s – Was he great? No, not great, but he was Chuck Berry last I looked – Grade: B
2011 – 2012 – I had tickets to Gov’t Mule and got sick and stayed home.
2012 – 2013 – Jay Z – Barclay Center – With Coldplay opening, surely it must have been fun, right? right? – Grade: C+
2013 – 2014- Billy Joel – Remarkably bad set filled with deep albm tracks. On New Year’s Eve. what a fuckface – Grade: C-
Ahh, there’s the rub. I got a ticket for Skrillex and Diplo at MSG. Why? I caught some of Skillex’s set at Governors Ball this June and he was terrific and I wanted a closer look and really a MSG is the best place to see a rave and I can’t resist it. I might add that I started listening to recess again, which I kinda dismissed in March but I am beginning to really dig now… so yeah, rave to 2015 folks.
