$15 Itunes Coupons From Groupon… What does This Tell Us?

I noticed the Groupon offer Thursday afternoon but didn’t get around to it till Friday and by that time it was over. Over 25,000 ITunes $15 cards sold for $10 each. You gotta think, what the hell is that about? Why would ITunes do it and if they were to do it why not do it themselves? How do they need a middle man on the deal?

Essentially, ITunes gave away $125,000 for no reason whatsoever. Publicity? I guess you can consider it a kind of advertising, right? I mean, all the people who bought it plus all the people who wrote about it and all the people who are writing about it? It can’t be to drum up interest, I mean at this point it is what it is, though it is such a great idea it makes you wonder where Amazon is? Or even streaming services like Spotify and definitely Beats who could really take advantage of this.

It also makes you wonder what would happen if Apple lowered the price of every song to 99 cents and every album to $9.99 -how would this affect sales? Wanna take a guess? Sales would go through the roof. I’ve written this before but this is exactly how ITunes should be battling streaming, through enticing not the hardcore music fan for whom all you can eat is irresistible, but the mainstream pop fan who buys a handful of albums and singles a year but who could buy more if it wasn’t so expensive.

As for the Groupon deal. That was probably just some advertising wiseguy and since I missed it what do I care.
