Active Viewin': Concert Picks Week of July 28th, 2014

Conor and the Dawes of Perception
Conor and the Dawes of Perception

I have been disappointed in Conor Oberst for years now and the last two times I’ve seen him live I’ve not been thrilled. It is six years since I caught him at the tiny “Other Music” and longer still since his residency at the Town Hall. So Conor at Summerstage on Tuesday: why is it a pick of the week? Because it’s Conor Oberst, that’s why.

Monday – The Kooks – Webster Hall – has a band ever let success destroy em faster? A shame because they are very clever UK type pop group.

Tuesday – Imelda May – Bowery ballroom – Rockabilly with superior vocals.

Wednesday – Jesse Malin – Bowery Electric – The former D Feneration leader current owner of this very venue comes home.

Wednesday – Jon Bon Jovi – Count Basie Theatre – Sure he sucks BUT HE SUCKS AT A SMALL VENUE… I am Stageit ing it.

Wednesday – Mickey Dolenz – BB Kings – The best of the solo Monkees plus he was nice to me when I accosted him in a restaurant last year.

Friday – Blake Shelton – He is good not because he is the best writer, certainly little to do with “The Voice”, but because, like his wife, he has the best character.

Saturday – Rixton – Irving Plaza – Manchester’s answer to NSYNC

Saturday – Dr. John & the Night Trippers – Central Park Summerstage – Right place, right time

Sunday – Monica Passin – The Treehouse at 2A – One of the best clubs in the city with the best country singer in the city.
