Ty Segall is a wonder kid, a guitar wiz,… he is only 27 and has a mile-long Wikipedia page because of all the recordings he has put out since,…. Oh only 2005! He has been very busy and likes to stay that way apparently, as he will soon release a new album called ‘Manipulator’. The album has ‘only’ 17 tracks and will be his 7th solo work, and he did this, at the top of being part of a million other bands. Henry-Rollins-approved (‘Ty Segall is a huge part of my radio show, and I play a lot of Ty’, said Rollins), good friend with Thee Oh Sees’ John Dwyer, White Fence’s Tim Presley and Mikal Cronin, Ty is a must-see live as he always gives raging riotous shows, filled with epic guitars collapsing into a beautiful sonic chaos.
Ty has recently moved in Los Angeles and the video teaser was obviously filmed in my neighborhood as I recognize so many famous spots as Sunset Boulevard runs through Silver Lake. Ty plays a pretty limo driver in full make-up, picking up mysterious people at different locations, a girl in curlers, a businessman, a rocker girl at the strip club Cheetahs, a fat man in fur, another pretty girl, while we listen to furious guitars,… so furious that, when the fur man inserts a green fluorescent tape in the car radio, the whole thing bursts into flames.
‘Manipulator’ will be out on August 26th via Dragcity, and this is how the label describes the new work: ‘Multicolored manias abound as our young fuzz-master breaks the dials in search of the ultimate distortion, combing dark and light tones together into the long hair of seventeen songs. Fresh beats abound and savage rock sits heavily next to hip-shakin’ sunshine pop as Ty sets the kitchen sink on fire!’
To celebrate, Ty will embark into a huge world tour (see the dates below), with five dates in Los Angeles – and I will see him at the FYF Fest of course. Honestly, this guy is now unstoppable.
