The Front Bottoms are one of my favorite bands and when I heard the news that they were releasing something new soon, I got ridiculously excited. They are releasing a brand new EP, “Rose”, on June 17. It has old songs and new, both recently recorded, and the six-track release seems like it’s going to be phenomenal. The track listing has been released as well:
1. Flying Model Rockets
2. Lipstick Covered Magnet
3. 12 Feet Deep
4. Jim Bogart
5. Be Nice To Me
6. Awkward Conversations
“Jim Bogart”, a supposedly new tune, was posted on YouTube. The lyric video features the cover art for “Rose”, and considering I hadn’t heard a new TFB song in ages, I didn’t know what to expect. As soon as I heard Brian Sella’s iconic voice, I was hooked. It feels like older Front Bottoms and I love it. There’s a guest vocalist, a girl, and their voices work really well together. I was pleasantly surprised. Upon further research, I found out this song was never officially released but is an old track, and they redid it. I know that the band’s earlier releases were recorded really awfully and are barely listenable, so I’m looking forward to hearing other songs redone and revamped.
The track feels nostalgic and summery, and it’s so simplistic. I love how the guitar sounds and how it’s stripped down and Brian’s voice really takes center stage. Something about his vocals send chills down my spine, and any time I hear him sing something new I get really giddy. Over the years, he’s managed to keep his raw and rough style, which is really admirable and has helped the band to stand out from any other in the scene. This new release will have old and new fans jumping for joy.
