Joyce Manor New Unnamed Song, Reviewed

Joyce Manor released the lyrics to an unrecorded new song and it seems like just yesterday I was wishing they’d put out new material.  My prayers have been answered.  The unnamed tune was recorded during the band’s show at The Irenic in May, and I love the way it sounds.  They certainly kept their post hardcore feel and it suits them so well, and I’m hoping 2014 is the year of their third full length.

“Sunken city by the ocean, you could teach the seventh grade.  Do you think because you choose to?  You always fall in love the way you’re supposed to at the Target inside the mall.”  Barry’s voice carries over everything, even live, and I love it.  What’s interesting is I can’t remember the last time I heard a song live before it was recorded, and that makes it even more special.
The tune is short and sweet, fast and the melody is complex and wonderful, and feels like a classic punk song.  “You wonder how long something can last- pretty sure most people don’t think about that.  But who the fuck is laughing now?”  The song has a harsh feel and feels like it could be to an enemy, the angst and anger in the lyrics pack a definite punch.
It’s a wonderful addition to their live set, and fit in really well in the video of their whole performance.  Seeing how passionate they are was refreshing, because I was hoping they hadn’t lost their spark.  This new tune is bound to be the song of the summer, and I can’t wait for more.
