Lana Del Rey has revealed the tracklist and the cover art of her next album via Facebook and Twitter and all the hipsters are already melting from anticipation. The cover is quite trite and expected, black and white pic, vintage car at least from what I can see, and Lana gazing in the vague, neither sad nor happy. This woman has always had the most blazé expression on her face without having done anything. Anyway, the tracklist is a sort of joke, you could write a Lana Del Rey story with these titles: A ‘Sad Girl’, a ‘Brooklyn Baby, moved to the ‘West Coast’ to ‘Fuck her Way Up to the Top’ as she believed in the old adage ‘Money Power Glory’, but got ‘Pretty When She Cried when she realized she was living in a ‘Cruel World’,… I am not sure where Axl Rose (Guns and Roses) fits in this mini novel made of seven titles of her new songs but this has probably something to do with fucking her way to the top’ and ‘The Other Woman’… when it comes to clichés Lana is the queen, Lana del Rey the bombshell is written all over this tracklist.
I know we shouldn’t judge a book by its cover – or should we? – but I wonder whether she is using a song name generator to write the title of her songs, all this is so predictable. Everything here suggests trashy decadence, self-indulgence and grandiloquence, wrapped inside a random reference to Kubrick/Burgess because the queen of Hollywood is also an intellectual. And it is sure that she divides people, either you love her or hate her. I guess it is now okay to hate Lana Del Rey, it is even hip to hate her. I am never sure where I fit in this picture. I have seen her fans up close and personal, and when I say love I should rephrase that, it is pure fanatic adoration and it is scary.
