It is no shocker that the older you get, the more obsessed you get with time. You’ve had more of it so you both feel it more and also you feel it differently: it is both longer and faster than when you’re young. When you’re a child, your life has an immediacy that while brief is also very very longways: three days ago could be three years. Think of summer vacations, those three months seem to never end; it is like you will always be thirteen years old on summer vacation, school will never start again.
It gives childhood a mythic quality which it doesn’t really deserve. Because childhood doesn’t just immediacy but it also has the opposite, an endless length which suddenly concludes. It is that old time-space with age thrown in.
Since I don’t have kids myself, I don’t see it as obviously as people who do have children. But my niece is gonna be 40 years old next year and our youngest member here, Mary Magpie, will be off to college this year, so the world seems to have idled for her but it wasn’t really idling at all.
And there is a pop music segment to all of the above. The girl in the picture above is Noel Gallagher formerly of Oasis’s daughter Anais Gallagher. She is fourteen and she has just landed a gig at BBC TV’s “Entertainment” program ion the children’s BBC Network. And I guess her childhood, which would have included her dad’s divorce from her Mom and her Uncle, wasn’t exactly all that. Very insecure stuff. And then appearing on a TV show? Not certain I’d enjoy that…

“Anais, the rocker’s daughter with first wife Meg Matthews, has been recruited by BBC bosses to work on entertainment programme Friday Download, which airs on children’s channel CBBC.
The 14 year old will join Amy Winehouse’s goddaughter Dionne Bromfield, who has been a presenter on the series since 2011. Anais’ role will be to give fashion and style tips.
A source tells The Sun newspaper, “Bosses see great potential in Anais. She auditioned and was an instant hit. Anais is a quick learner and very natural on screen. Of course, her connections played a part.
“All going well they could develop her within the company as a future star.”
The former Oasis rocker divorced Matthews in 2001 after three years of marriage.”
