Sure, I loved Marvin Hamlisch. He was the anti-Henry Mancini, everybody loved Marvin Hamlisch . Hell, even Barbra Streisand loved Marvin Hamlisch. He died two years ago at the age of 68 and before that , well, if all he had done was one of the greatest musicals of all time, “God I hope I het it, I hope I get it” “A Chorus Line”, he’d live forever. But hey he did “The Way We Were As well” and be honest, didn’t you think the ragtime “The Entertainer” was a standard (from “The Sting”)?

When I saw Babs at Barclay Center she choked up when she mentioned him.

What else? How about this from Wiki: “He is one of only twelve people to win an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony. He is one of ten people to win three or more Oscars in one night and the only one other than a director or screenwriter to do so. He is one of only two people to have won those four prizes and a Pulitzer Prize (Richard Rodgers is the other). Hamlisch also won two Golden Globes.”
Yeah, some guy right? Well, good enough for the Public Theater to honor him where the cheapest ticket is, er, $650…!!! Though if you got some real bucks to spend on this benefit for the Public theater? $100,000 a ticket for the Shakespeare table… Man, some people have money, don’t they? Not me, of course, I’m broke.

Here is the invite I received:

“Join us for this unforgettable summer evening that will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the creation of The Public’s groundbreaking musical, A Chorus Line, and the legendary man behind the music, Marvin Hamlisch, in a one-night-only, star-studded gala to support The Public Theater.
