Week 18
Recorded: I really love the new Peter Stampfel album and I am kicking myself for the opportunity to catch the great man at Mercury Lounge last week. Better Than Expected might not have lived up to its name but that’s mostly because expectations are so high.
Live: I did mention that I missed Peter Stampfel, right? I hope he plays again soon, also missed Modern Hut, who recorded the bet album of 2014, opening at the same concert. So a rarity, a week without a gig. Also, I passed on Coldplay and Bryan Ferry -hey, I’m not made of money.
Theater: Neil Patrick Harris is a talented fellow, but not quite enough of a rocker at the Belasco in “Hedwig And The Angry Inch” -an essentially easy to fix story since Hedwig could’ve have left to the States as a US citizen since his father was was American; the botched sex change (the extra inch is what is left of her penis) and since she had the change to fool immigration services in East Berlin, how did she explain to them what is left of her penis?
Music Writing: For some reason I woke up thinking about two of my favorite critics, both in the field of motion pictures, Pauline Kael and Vincent Canby. When you read the reviews of Damon Albarn you need something good to take the bad taste out of your mouth.
Sports: Pine Tar? Are you kidding? Why would Pineda be so stupid as to be caught twice. He deserved the suspension.
Television – I’ve taken to watching the Tonight Show The following day on line. Very very good at comedy set pieces, Fallon is too ass kiss in interviews and his monologues are too schticky.
Anything else?: Bring on another week, I am sick and tired of this one.
