What Spotify has data wise is a great firm grasp on who is listening to what (and where) and had it breaks down demographically.
But I am ot sure what use the info is unless you are in the business of advertising these artists because otherwise, who cares if Eminem is most popular with men but 16 th most popular for women? How does it effect what you do with Eminem?
Plus, by a funny or a marketing savvy coincidence, Eminem’s tour partner this summer, Rohanna is the most popular singer amongst women though a powerful # 8 among men. It makes the Eminem-Rihanna concert a gender bursting smash hit of a concept.
At # 2 among women is Bruno Mars, who is a sparkling and fit # 5 among men (I know, I don’t get it either) and meanwhile, what to make of Daft Punk being # 2 among men but nosedived with women, I guess they don’t wanna get lucky.
Otherwise, no big shockers here. Rap, unless there is a cute guy rapping, belongs to men, and pop with a chick lead singer works best for women. Though the numbers do seem a little stranger, how does Taylor Swift get to be the most popular songwriter around, yet still be around the #7 mark for women and a ghastly # 37 for men. Nope, it makes no sense to me either. Here is the link so you can check out the chart itself.
Incidentally, if you go a step further back you’ll discover “The Echo Nest”, recently purchased by Spotify “a spin-off of research work at the MIT Media Lab that automatically understands the audio and textual content of music] and currently powers music data solutions such as recommendation, playlisting, fingerprinting and audio analysis for consumers and developers.“
Let me dumb that down: they can tell yopu who is listening to what.
