She Reviews Her Husbands Record Collection One Album At A Time

This is my favorite new blog in a coupla years, since thatMoz one actually, it is called “My Husband’s Stupid Record Collection “, “Where I listen to my husband’s record collection, one record at a time, and tell you what I think” and it exactly what it says it is. A Librarian, named Sarah,  tired of packing and unpacking her husbands 1500 LPs decided to delve deeper, give them a listen, and review them all.  Sarah wrote: “Alex’s taste in music could probably be best described as eclectic on the snobbier side. My taste in music has changed from the early beginnings of Disney musicals to Dave Matthews Band, to discovering the Pixies in college. I’ve never been ahead of the curve with music, but my taste could probably also be described as eclectic on the snobbier side too- just in a much more clueless way. Alex said reading a reaction from a person like me, rather than a person who knows about the history of what I might be listening to, who has been listening to the same stuff for decades and has the vocabulary to talk about it, will be funny, sincere and maybe even thought provoking. Maybe? I don’t know, I guess we’ll see.”

A great idea and you can check it  out here which despite the not having the vocabulary stuff reads like very good music criticism. Sarah has excellent ears and I can prove it because she loves Louis Armstrong and has something alarmingly insightful to say about his Dukes Of Dixieland album: “Aww you guys, right away Louis Armstrong’s voice! It’s so sweet and smooth and inviting and deep. Then a white guy starts singing and it just doesn’t compare, it’s just so normal and Louie’s voice is like and angel and a puppy and a grandpa all rolled into one. It’s pretty euphoric.” That’s a great way to explain Louis Armstrong’s singing, “Pretty euphoric”.

As a firm believer in the any one can write school, I find Sarah’s reviews a real pleasure. and quite understand why this mix of enthusiasm and naiveté has become so popular, illustrated by pictures of Sarah with the various album covers and including the implicit joys of LP as opposed to streaming, it is fun to red someone write how next time they”l listed the second side first.
