There are still some excellent radios out there, and if you live in Los Angeles, just listen to Cal State Northridge-based public station KCSN 88.5, anything they play is great. My car radio has been stuck to this same frequency since forever and I am never disappointed by their programing, plus they truly support local music, and I like them for this too. Of course you can listen to them on the web here.
And you know what? I wasn’t listening when Paul McCartney himself called the station last Thursday! Station program director Sky Daniels explained to the LA Times how this crazy thing happened: ‘Paul McCartney called today to express his appreciation of KCSN and to thank us for our support of his new record. He told us he was having dinner in L.A. last night and all of his ‘friends were raving about KCSN, telling me how you were playing multiple tracks from the album.’
Daniels continued: ‘Paul’s call was so thoughtful, I found myself fighting back tears. He told us of how his friends all loved the station, and they told him that KCSN was playing a number of songs from ‘New’ and he simply wanted to say thanks.’
Daniels interviewed the rock star in situ and this turned into a long conversation about McCartney’s last album, the recent 50th anniversary of the Beatles and the reason why he is currently in LA: he is composing music for an animated film, shooting a video for the song ‘Early Days’ and simply enjoying the weather.
The station has of course archived the interview on KCSN site – by the way they have hundreds of interviews with very interesting artists there!
Now, who would have thought that Sir Paul McCartney needed publicity? And publicity from such a small station? If anything, this proved that Paul is still cool and that I have great taste, Paul McCartney’s tastes!
