Modern Baseball "Your Graduation" Video Reviewed

Modern Baseball’s been makin’ waves in the scene, and I’m gladly surfing along.  They released a video for their tune, “Your Graduation”.  It is cinematically brilliant, the song is punchy and strong and the perfect blend of angst pop punk vibe and quality lyricism/emo style.  It’s freakin’ great.

The video starts off with the ending of “Hours Outside in the Snow”, an older song of theirs.  I love when bands have little continuity nuances like that because it’s clever and cute.  The Wonder Years do this a lot, reusing lyrics and riffs from older work of theirs.  I think it’s quirky and a sign of really fantastic musicianship.

The song as a whole is stunning.  The vocals are phenomenal- they have the sense of bleak disinterest that fits the lyrics perfectly.  I love how well they fit- “It’s been three whole years of me thinking about you every day.  Sometimes for hours, sometimes in passing,” starts out the tune.  It picks up with, “Bullshit you fucking miss me.  There I said it I guess I’ll talk to you in a few months, sitting drunk on the sidewalk.”  It’s powerful and once it hits the chorus, there’s an impactful bumping up of energy, making this single rise to the top of the list of songs I want to see performed live.  It has a good group-vocal feel, which is necessary for pretty much any pop punk song.
As for the video, it’s wonderful.  It’s shot really well, and the concept of it is entertaining.  We see our protagonist, our main character, sitting stoic whilst in the middle of his (girlfriend’s) chaotic and busy life.  It captures a sense of spinning out of control, being bored, but being too lazy to do anything about it.
All in all, I’m impressed and totally in love with Modern Baseball’s latest release
