Vanaprasta at the Echo, Thursday December 9th, 2010: Cover Stars -by Alyson Camus

What would you think of a band you have never seen or heard which opens its set with Kanye West’s ‘Runaway’? Bold? Opportunistic? Funny? A little bit of all of the above, but it was extremely well received by the crowd of the Echo, last Thursday night.

Vanaprasta was closing the 4 band-gig night and the room was apparently full of friends and loyal fans of the Silver Lake group, which only formed 2 years ago but has generated quite a buzz around town. The quintet has a dramatic presence on stage with Steven Wilkin, a lead singer pushing the high note like a young Barry Gibb whom he even shares a light resemblance with (the hair and the beard must have been for something). But yes, the hairs of the five guys were a part of their act as there was a lot of hair flinging, head balancing, body swinging during many of their songs, which may have had a little bit of that Led Zeppelin-esque feeling.

Some of their experimental rock songs, moving slowing with long soaring screams and heaving guitars riffs, were putting the crowd in a sort of druggie trance, not unlike that induced by some of the most famous psychedelic bands, whereas more melody driven songs such as ‘Minnesota’, would easily beat anything Kings of Leon has done, not that I really like Kings of Leon…

Steven Wilkin on vocals and synth, Collin Desha on guitar, Taylor Brown on bass, Cameron Dmytryk on guitar, and drummer Ben Smiley released a real powerful energy on stage behind a mysterious luminous triangular figure, which seems as enigmatic as their name band, that, I have checked, designs a stage of life in Hindu society.

They have released a 3 songs EP and a 7 inch with two songs that you canstream over there:http://vanaprasta.bandcamp.com/

They started with Kanye West but I also read they did some LCD soundsystem covers for a charity show, so what’s next?
