Seven minutes and twenty seven seconds of thump. New Order made it cool to dance again and gave club DJ’s the ability to grab a drink and take a pee. The transition of Manchester UK’s music scene is notorious. Let’s face it if you weren’t from Manchester in the 70s you weren’t jack. The 24 hour party people had more idiotic swag than any LA or NY borough. The States tried, hell they still do- but fail.
Manchester was the supersonic hub of cool. Flash forward kids it’s 2014 and we have nothing better to do that dig up the past and reserve it as historic value. The Swedes have done just that by taking a 7 minute song and making it a 30 minute documentary. What. The. Hell?
I do truly understand the need for nostalgia and I am as guilty as the next kid who thinks their generation was better than everyone elses but if you have the time or the budget to create a documentary about a song- you need to reassess.
Last summer, the members of New Order — Bernard Sumner, Stephen Morris and Gillian Gilbert, as well as former bassist Peter Hook — and for some odd reason sleeve designer Peter Saville were interviewed by Swedish National Television for a 30-minute documentary on the story behind the 1983 single.
Had enough of my sass? GOOD! Cuz this documentary fucking rules! ‘dun dun diggadiggadigga digga’ this song has a ridiculous effect on people and fucking hell deserves a documentary on it! I love how the band all old and crust fronts up to discuss it like the cure for cancer or something. I adore the 80s flashbacks and the pure feeling of HOT DAMN MY DECADES RULED!
Check it out here– no really its cool as hell. Subtitles!
