The only thing I remember about Macaulay Culkin was these ‘Home Alone’ movies and these sleepovers at Michael Jackson’ Neverland ranch; since, he has had some drug problems like about every child actor, he made a few obscure movies but it’s difficult to believe that the guy is now 33! He has re-emerged this week in the most unexpected and funny way: he is in a band, covering the Velvet Underground’s classics, with a strong pizza flavor!
What? The Pizza Underground – yes, it is apparently a real band with a Facebook page, a twitter account, a tumblr, and even a bandcamp page – has already put out a demo, a sort of medley of Lou Reed’s greatest hits with the lyrics seriously reworked for pizza lovers. And you won’t need to be a Velvet Underground’s fan to recognize the titles: ‘Papa John Says’, ‘I’m Beginning to Eat the Slice’, ‘Pizza’, ‘I’m Waiting for Delivery Man’, ‘Cheese Days’, ‘Pizza Day’, ‘All the Pizza Parties’, ‘Pizza Gal’, and may be my favorite ‘Take a Bite of the Wild Slice’. The whole thing was recorded at Culkin’s house and it sounds really lo-fi, with five voices and a minimal use of instruments, guitar, glockenspiel, tambourine, percussion, kazoo and of course a pizza box! I wonder whether they have already recorded a complete song but apparently they have performed in a New York City club, at least once, according to this blog.
Also the collection of vintage pictures as well as the fake Andy Warhol banana/anchovy found on their Facebook, are totally great (see below) and very funny, but how could they possibly go on passed this hilarious demo? I don’t know, ‘Veggies in Furs’? ‘Little Caesars’? ‘Pizza of Love’? I have a completely renewed respect for pizzas right now, but can we regard this pizza medley as a real tribute to the VU or is it a bit too cheesy? Well, you tell me! But thanks to the pizza gods, they waited till Lou Reed was dead to do this.
