eBay Auction of The Month: Ian Curtis 'Suicide Table'

a joy divided

On May 18, 1980 Ian Curtis, lead singer of Joy Division decided it was time to check out of life and killed himself in the kitchen of his home.  His wife Debbie found the wiry punk and that is where our story begins.

After this tragedy Ian’s wife sold  the house with furniture including the table to a neighbor who then gave the table to her daughter. When she no longer needed the table she offered it back to the Curtis family. Ian’s daughter Natalie eventually sold the table on eBay.  Thus Natalie began the trail of shame on for this four legged historic slab.

The winner of that first auction who has no name is putting it back on the market. Considering the popularity of the yet to be released in the States film ‘Control’.    She states ‘Clearly this table is a unique item and I have put a reserve on the Table which I think reflects its true worth. If it doesn’t sell I will merely keep it,’ the current owner writes.

How do I feel about this auction?  Well at first pretty darn disgusted.  There is no rest for the dead and a buck can be made off anything to the proper buyer.  But a part of me is stunned that someone would consider selling something like this.  Burn it.  I was never a fan of Joy Division and the resurgence of his God like status is a joke.  That t-shirt, is so annoying its without words.  But there are legitimate fans and I am fairly certain not one of them would want this table.  It makes me sad- humanity sucks.  Natalie Curtis, why why why start such an awful and disrespectful trend?

Rest in Peace, Ian.

Bidding for the table at time of publication is at  $12,935. Check the latest bidding here.
