There really is nothing worse than talk shows. Jerry Springer was good until they realized that redneck sells then it got scripted but the ‘self help’ or ‘feel good’ shows- pure crap. Remember The Phil Donahue Show, that at least had some merit – it was also over 30 years ago.
But the new wave of empathy on a TV set is Dr Phil. That moustachioed hillbilly. I swear i cannot dive at the television fast enough to change the channel the moment I hear that intro. This is why I’m glad for written word. Without it I would have learned about Steven Tyler, the eccentric Aerosmith front man, and his drug babble.
Tyler is infamous and publicly open about his recovery attempts. He has fallen off many a stage and made many a fool of himself but hey, he’s a rock star so its OK.
On a recent episode of Dr. Phil, Steven unleashed his latest dash of intelligence in the theory that doctors are drug dealers. He goes so far to blame his 2009 stage dive on the doctors who he trusted.
Tyler says: “I had a bunch of operations and simply didn’t follow my program I kept the drugs at the side of my bed; I did more instead of going what was prescribed. Remember, I’m a very good drug addict because I’ve done it for so many years.
“It cost me nothing less than everything. It’s serious when you lose your kids, your children, your wife, your band, your job – and you’ll never understand why because you’re an addict. You can’t figure that out.”
The singer feels it was impossible not to fall back into the addiction cycle. “You know who the new dealers are? Doctors,” he states. “I’ve gone to and said, ‘I’m in a 12-step program.’ He goes, ‘Ah, good for you!’
“On the way out he says, ‘You need something to sleep tonight?’ I’m trying to tell him I can’t take anything that’s mood-altering – because if I do, I like to ride it.
“It’s euphoric recall; it’s not so odd. It’s human.”
Isnt one of those 12 steps to take responsibility for your addiction and not blame others for it?
