“The dispute over Black Flag is not motivated by an effort to stop anyone from covering Black Flag songs. Quite to the contrary. this dispute began when Henry Garfield (Rollins) and Keith Morris made an effort to hijack the name — and the logo — for their own use.
“Behind everyone’s back, in September 2012, Garfield and Morris filed fraudulent trademark applications in which they are claiming to own the name and the logo. Had we not taken action, this pair could have snuck these false applications through the Trademark Office, enabling them to stop Black Flag from playing and gaining exclusive use of the name and logo for themselves. We are also trying to stop Morris and the others in his band from using the name and the logo in a misleading way, and from selling bootleg items.”
We are talking about 50 year old men who 30 years ago travelend around in an old van. This is not Aerosmith or Van Halen these are old punk rockers. Ginn is the next Brett Gurewitz, an aged old has been who owns a record company and plays in a band like a nostalgia act. Bad Religion and Black Flag were pillars of 80s punk and the dirge of today. How sad it is to see old has beens fight. Like wrinkled beauty queens fighting over the Oil of Olay- pathetic and useless.
No one is going to retire off Black Flags name. There isnt enough demand unless of course Urban Outfitters start selling their shirts (that means you Ian McKaye). I am all for protecting what’s yours. I am always amazed when sweaty punk rock kids own companies. They all said we’d end up pumpin’ gas but check it out we own corporations! What I dont like is when they become exactly what we rallied against. Uptight assholes hording their Skittles.
Ginn- you’re never going to be rich from Black Flag. You may cash in on some nostalgia and as for Morris and Garfield, they dont really need you cuz let’s face it their names without the BF logo sell seats.
