If you follow him on Twitter, you know that Wayne Coyne has been drawing and doodling forever, he has drawn the cover of his band’s album, ‘Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots’ and has always had a strong interest in visual arts,… any Flaming Lips concert can demonstrate it.
The Flaming Lips frontman has started a new adventure, a comic book entitled ‘The Sun Is Sick’,… which could be the title of a new Lips’ song. As everyone can guess it, the comic has to do with Coyne’s own science fiction mythology: galaxies, dying stars and a princess heroine. No, it’s not a remake of Star Wars, it’s way more psychedelic than any Lucas production and there is of course more nudity involved.
Wayne has admitted being involved into intense doodling, even during interviews, but there is a long way between a doodle and a book with a storyline, so how did this happen? This is what he explained to the Huffington Post:
‘You know, comic books are in panels. And I was drawing in panels. But it was like, “Oh, I’m just drawing a stupid story.” I had done several [panels] that were just completely random, sick shit. I have no limits to what I’ll be thinking of. And then I think one day people were just like, ‘You should make this into a comic.’ And I sort of decided to connect some of the stories and it became this thing.’
In this thing, the heroine is a blind princess who has an eyeball baby (don’t ask me more) and the drawings are very colorful with a few green monsters, and pink triangles with limbs. The usual bizarre weirdness. So is it a new career for Wayne Coyne? Yes and no, but he may make an apparition at San Diego Comic Con:
‘I really don’t want people to think I look at this like that. I’m a serious comic book maker; I’m not really interested in that world. A lot of the graphic novels are too dorky for me. But I’m not against it. I’m kind of conflicted about it. But maybe I should just go and not worry about it.’
