I
t’s funny, I was just talking about Blue Octobers front man Justin Furstenfeld. Wondering what became of him. There was a silly book tour with acoustic performance that I opted out of. Enough already about his mental therapy. There is empathy and there is sympathy and there is pathetic. I didn’t want to reach the pathetic stage.
But apparently the band is alive and well (when 50% of the band are siblings, well sorta tough to break up) The new single “Bleed Out” is another angry manic depressive cry that the band has become synonymous. Justin is always angry for being hurt. It’s a recipe that works. He strikes at your heart strings and zing, he owns you. I have been a fan for so many years that I cant help but cheer this bundle of Prozac on.
I am a bit tired of the recipe though. We have his works on being institutionalized, with wonderful songs like ‘James’, we have numerous swan songs “Into The Ocean”, “Hate Me”, we have the vengeance will be mine rant of “Every Man In America” and now he’s bleeding out his anger.
Alrighty then. But the song isn’t horrible its just predictable. This tune can be dumped on any album and fit like a puzzle piece. Hes angry, he’s hurt, we know. Furstenfelds beautiful voice dares you to not feel compassion for his plea. I certainly fall victim to the same act over and over again because its simply well executed. I suppose Blue October songs are like owning multiple pairs of jeans, they all fit just a bit differently, some more cozy than others yet they all cover your ass.
I’m hoping for a little something more from this Austin Texas band. I want them to be huge (no pun intended) but they need to steer in a less depressive direction and mix it up a bit. I’m not implying ‘walking on sunshine’ happy, but for Gods sake stop being so beaten. (Welcome Back Blue October- I was waiting for you)
