It has been 15 years since David Johansen's alter ego, martini swilling, nightlife chilling, lounge lizard Mr. Buster Poindexter, gas deemed to join us, and the world has been worse for the lose though Johansen himself has never been in better shape.
Stil 15 years is a long time to go without his most successful incarnation hitting the stage and so I bet I am not the only person thrilled to hear Buster is back in tux and slicked back hair sipping on Old Fashions and singing songs from the 1940s and/or Latin American swing with more cool or, Fod knows, Happy Hour, more songs about drinking and drinking.
While in theory, this has always been a strange move for the rock and roll giant Johansen, it was followed by his Harry Smith band archival recordings and while nothing appears to connect "Good Morning Judge" to "James Alley Blues", how about to "Somebody Buy Me A Drink"? From this distance, David's career takes a different shading from the deep red of his lipstick. It becomes a deeper, more profound career in music,. And Poindexter is an important dimension.
David is on the record as being sick to death of "Hot Hot Hot", his biggest hit. But that was a long time ago and some 20 years after Poindexter's commercial zenith, here he is again. Apparently ready to revisit "Good Morning Judge" and "Oh Me Oh My (I'm A Fool For You Baby)" one more time, Buster is performing a Tuesday residency at The Cutting Room thru May 7th, though no word as to whether the Uptown Horns will be joining him.
This should be the most fun, you would be screwy to miss this screwy music.
