Street artist Shepard Fairey was on my street this week, doing one of his signature murals in front of a hardware/art store. I stumbled on him and his team in action and was quite impressed by their efficiency – they were done in just two days! – and by the awesome result!
The ‘Make Art Not War’ mural sure adds some bright colors in my neighborhood, and just look at the final result, who wouldn’t want this wall around? I got to see him working with his stencils and spray cans, and it looks like a very detail-oriented work. The whole process was apparently filmed by a crew as a part of a larger project, but I don’t know much more than this!
Shepard Fairey reached stardom when he created the famous series of Obama posters to support the president's 2008 campaign, but he was heavily criticized for his use of copyright images,… whatever, I like him and what he does, and I have always seen him interact with people without an ounce of ego, generously distributing his stickers. Plus I saw him hanging around with Steve Jones several times, including at this Joe Strummer tribute in 2007!
He has also designed the cover of too many albums to list them here, the last one being Bad Brains’ ‘Into the Future’.
So I guess, thanks Shepard for embellishing my neighborhood!
