It’s so odd sometime. Growing up you don’t think of longevity of greatness. None of us thought pop stars like Cyndi Lauper would still be around. I mean not dead but rather still in the news. Its always so wonderful to see people from ‘back in the day’ doing grown up things that are impressively cool.
“Kinky Boots” the Lauper musical was acknowledged by the industry as Best Broadway Musical fin the Outer Critics Circle Awards. Just takes ‘She Bop’ to a different level- this wasn’t a fad this was/is a true artist. “Kinky” also won Best Score and is in the lead for a Tony Award which are announced on June 9.
Another cat from way back when is the big suited David Byrne. I may not like his work (everything sucked after ‘Psycho Killer’) and that St Vincent shit makes me gag but his Off Broadway “Here Lies Love´ scored some awards too. Best Off Broadway Musical is not exactly shabby. Theater is such a brutal racket, its amazing to have two 80s icons acknowledged in such a way.
In total, Kinky Boots won three awards, Best New Broadway Musical, Outstanding New Score and Actor in a Musical (Billy Porter).
The revival of Pippin was the big winner for the night, taking home seven awards. We may not be big fans of organized awards shows but when a couple of our own get a nod its time to pause and high five our people. Consider that done
