So 3OH!3 has a new single out, their last being “My First Kiss ft.Ke$ha”. This new single is “Do or Die” which will be on their upcoming album. I wouldn’t expect this upcoming album to be very good if “Do or Die” is any sort of hint as to the direction 3OH!3 has taken with their music.
Frankly, I feel that this once powerful duo has sold out to today’s mainstream top 40 music. When I listened to them in 2008 as a little scene kid, their music had much more depth than this new single. Even now as I listen to some of their old music like “Don’t Trust Me” and “Starstrukk”, I can hear what makes 3OH!3 ane ntity of its own instead of just another EDM artist.
The chorus of “Do or Die”consists of the supposed hook “baby it’s do or die” muttered between some grinding synth tracks that I can’t imagine anyone dancing to. And, after all,dancing is really the only purpose this song serves, right? I mean there’s barely any substance to the lyrics so this song is relying strongly upon an infectious beat and “party hard” tone.
This song is more synthesizer than anything and it’s a bit disappointing considering 3OH!3 has come out with much better music than this. Even their last single with Ke$ha “My First Kiss” was better than this and it had already taken a huge step towards mainstream music. At least “My First Kiss” had a hook that could hold its own on the radio.
“Do or Die” is annoying to say the least,considering the harsh bass and synth lines drown out any sort of vocals that could redeem it. Let’s hope the rest of their new album has music with a bit more work put in to it.
