10 Songs: Tuesday, September 8th, 2015

1 –  Summer’s Almost Gone – The Doors – This is a perfect day for this day of the year, not an ending day but an instant nostalgia, a day where everything comes to a close and while it doesn’t aspire to death, it does aspire to an aching nostalgia. Morrison captures it perfectly, “when summer’s gone, where will we be?” The freest, warmest, youngest and most fun season  – A+

2 – High By The Beach – Lana Del Rey – I never quite forgave her for a dreadful show at Irving Plaza a couple of years, and got this song wrong when it first came out a coupla weeks ago. It is a gloriously dark and warm druggy sound – A-

3 – Honeymoon – Lana Del Rey – Admittedly, I may change my mind next week, but this old time ballad is a bit dreary – C+

4 – Picture This – Kero Kero Bonito – South London, sweet, very very sweet future pop. Catchy beat-y pop tone – B+

5 – Summertime Sadness – Lana Del Rey, Cedric Gervais – Heavy duty dance remix, drop dat bass – B

6 – There Will Never Be Another You – The Seekers – A song of romantic fidelity which equates everything to one love – A

7 – John Wayne Gacy, Jr – Sufjan Stevens – A horror song of empathy and murder – A

8 – Poses – Rufus Wainwright – His best song, so young and beautiful. Best line? “true love is a trophy” – A+

9 – On To The Next One – Jay Z, Swizz Beatz – Hova claims to be doing it his way, with a hook for the ages on top: “Freeze, somebody give me back some money please” – A+

10 – It’s Not Unusual – Tom Jones – His greatest moments is a Bacharach and David song that isn’t, the same horns (a trombone!) as Burt would give you and also a power on vocal – A+
